Águilas: the complete guide to the most authentic capital of the Costa Cálida
More than 30 beaches and coves, a castle overlooking two bays, a mining past with a British flavour and the most famous Carnival in the Mediterranean. Águilas is sea, history and fiesta in equal measure, just ten minutes from San Juan de los Terreros. This guide, written by locals, tells you everything.
From ore to tourism: the story of Águilas
Although its bay was already a port in Roman times, modern Águilas was born in the 18th century, when the Crown promoted its repopulation and built San Juan Castle to protect the coast from Barbary raids. The great leap came at the end of the 19th century with the ore rush: British companies laid the railway to the town to ship out iron from the interior, and from that golden age remain gems such as the Hornillo pier and a cosmopolitan air still felt in its layout and open character.
When mining faded, Águilas turned back to the sea: fishing, farming and, later, a tourism that has grown without losing its seafaring-town essence. Today it is the southernmost town on the Costa Cálida, a natural border with Almería, and one of the favourite getaways for those staying in San Juan de los Terreros, barely ten minutes along the coast.
The beaches and coves of Águilas: more than 30 reasons to come
Few Mediterranean municipalities can boast such a varied coastline: Águilas strings together more than thirty beaches and coves along 28 kilometres of shoreline, from town beaches with full services to protected unspoilt coves where the only sound is the sea. These are the essentials:
🏖️ Town beaches: Levante, Poniente, Las Delicias & La Colonia
The bays that embrace the castle. Sand, promenade, beach bars, showers and a lively feel all year round. Las Delicias, with its palm trees and promenade, is probably the most recognisable image of the town; La Colonia, a little more sheltered, is the favourite of local families.
🏝️ Hornillo beach & Playa Amarilla
Next to the historic mining pier and facing the Isla del Fraile, Hornillo combines history and snorkelling like no other. Beside it, the small, sheltered Amarilla owes its name to the golden colour of its rocks. Two Águilas classics that never disappoint.
🌊 Cuatro Calas: Calarreona, La Higuerica, Cala Cerrada & Los Cocedores
The most photogenic protected stretch in the south-east, on the boundary with San Juan de los Terreros. Fine sand, turquoise water, fossil dunes and seabeds perfect for snorkelling. In summer it pays to get up early; the rest of the year you will have them almost to yourself.
⛰️ Calabardina & the Cabo Cope coves
Ten minutes north, the small settlement of Calabardina
rests at the foot of the imposing Cabo Cope: a quiet beach, hidden coves and postcard sunsets. The perfect plan for an unhurried day.
The Castle of San Juan de las Águilas: the balcony over the two bays
On the hill separating the Levante and Poniente bays stands the fortress that gave rise to the modern town. Built in the 18th century as part of the coastal defence plan, it is now restored, open to visitors and hosts an exhibition on the history of Águilas. The walk up from the port is short and richly rewarded: from its walls the whole town unfolds at your feet, with the fishing port on one side and the Calabardina and Cabo Cope coastline in the distance.
💡 Local tip:
visit at the end of the afternoon and head down to the port for dinner afterwards. Check the opening times, which change with the seasons.
The Hornillo pier and the Isla del Fraile: the British legacy
At the start of the 20th century, iron from the inland sierras left for the world from here. The Hornillo pier, a colossal ore-loading dock built by the British railway company that ran the Águilas line, is one of the most impressive works of industrial engineering on the Spanish coast and the great symbol of the town's mining past.
Opposite it, a short swim or kayak away, the Isla del Fraile holds Roman-era archaeological remains and seabeds bursting with life: it is the snorkelling and diving spot most loved by the people of Águilas. The image of the pier with the island behind it, at sunset, is one that stays with you.
The port and the promenade: the seafaring soul of Águilas
Águilas remains, above all, a fishing town. Its port keeps an active fleet whose catch is auctioned every afternoon at the fish market, and watching the boats return escorted by seagulls is an everyday show that never gets old. Next to the fishing port, the Juan Montiel marina adds moorings, a sailing school and boat trips, and the Delicias promenade, with its century-old palm trees, invites you to stroll unhurried from the centre to the beach.
In the centre, do not miss Plaza de España with its giant ficus trees, the buzz of the terraces and the 1928 covered market, where among fresh fish and garden fruit you will discover local delicacies such as dried octopus or sardine flatbreads.
Águilas cuisine: port cooking with character
Here you eat as in the best fishing towns: fresh produce, little fuss and plenty of flavour. The star is the fish from the bay — bream, red mullet, octopus, prawns — going from fish market to table in hours, accompanied by the rice dishes of Levante tradition: caldero, black rice and arroz a banda. Among the most local bites, look for dried octopus, sardine flatbreads and salted fish, the legacy of centuries of living from the sea.
The offering ranges from beach bars with your feet in the sand to white-tablecloth restaurants around the port and Plaza de España. In summer and during Carnival it is wise to book a table, especially at weekends.
Cabo Cope, Calnegre and Calabardina: nature in its purest form
North of the town, the Cabo Cope and Puntas de Calnegre Regional Park protects one of the last unspoilt stretches of the Murcian coast: mountains dropping into the sea, solitary coves and the limestone mass of Cabo Cope watching the horizon, with the 16th-century Torre de Cope at its feet as a witness to the age of pirates. This is territory for hikers, cyclists and lovers of parasol-free coves.
At the foot of the cape, Calabardina is that little coastal village we all dream of discovering: small, quiet, with a sheltered beach and a handful of seafront restaurants. The panoramic road linking Águilas and Calabardina along the coast is an excursion in itself.
Things to do in Águilas: diving, hiking and the sea
🤿 Diving & snorkelling
Águilas is one of the leading diving destinations in the south-east. The Isla del Fraile, the Cabo Cope seabeds and the Cuatro Calas strip offer dives for all levels, with posidonia meadows, grouper and wrecks. Several centres in town organise try-dives and outings all year round.
🥾 Hiking & cycling
The Cabo Cope and Calnegre trails, the walk up to the castle and the coastal paths towards the Cuatro Calas and San Juan de los Terreros offer routes for every level. In spring the regional park bursts into colour and is a paradise for cycle touring.

👨👩👧👦 With kids
Shallow town beaches, ice creams on the Delicias promenade, the castle (kids love the climb up to the fortress), snorkelling at Hornillo and, if you are here in February, the children's Carnival parade. Águilas is a well-rounded family destination.
