San Juan de los Terreros: Complete Guide | Beaches, Castle, What to See & Getting Around
San Juan de los Terreros: the complete guide to Almería's best-kept secret
Crystal-clear beaches, an 18th-century castle overlooking the Mediterranean, Europe's most spectacular visitable geode ten minutes away and a family atmosphere you will fall for. This is the definitive guide to making the most of your holiday in Terreros — written right here, by locals.

From watchtower to holiday favourite: the story of Terreros
San Juan de los Terreros is the seaside gateway of the municipality of Pulpí, in the far north-east of the province of Almería, right on the border with the Region of Murcia. For centuries this coast was watchtower country: its cliffs and coves were a favourite landing spot for Barbary pirates, which is why in 1764, under the reign of Charles III, the Crown built the fortress that still crowns the village today.
Well into the 20th century, Terreros lived off the sea and the land: small fishing families, salted fish and the farm work of inland Pulpí, today one of Europe's most productive market gardens. Tourism arrived late and gently, and that is precisely its good fortune: there are no high-rise apartment blocks on the shoreline and no overcrowded beaches here. The village has grown outwards rather than upwards, with low-rise developments, a wide seafront promenade and a distinctly family feel.
Today San Juan de los Terreros combines the best of both worlds: the calm of a traditional coastal village and easy access to the great attractions of Almería's Levante coast and Murcia's Costa Cálida, from Mojácar to Águilas, all within half an hour.
Beaches and coves of San Juan de los Terreros
Terreros boasts several kilometres of coastline alternating sandy town beaches with sheltered coves tucked between cliffs. Its main beaches have flown the Blue Flag in numerous seasons, and the water, shallow along most stretches, is perfect for families with children. These are the ones not to miss:
Mar Serena beach with golden sand and calm water in San Juan de los Terreros
Mar Serena
The name says it all (calm sea): gentle waters, fine sand and a seabed that shelves very gradually. It is the families' favourite and the most convenient beach in the village, with the promenade, beach bars and every service just steps away. Perfect for the first swim of the day and long summer afternoons.
Mar Rabiosa beach with gentle waves by the San Juan de los Terreros promenade
Mar Rabiosa
Mar Serena's livelier sister. Here the sea rolls in with a little more energy, making it a favourite with wave-jumpers and paddle boarders. It shares the promenade, accessible entrances and the lively atmosphere of the village centre with Mar Serena.
La Entrevista beach, a quiet sand and gravel beach in San Juan de los Terreros
Playa de la Entrevista
South of the town centre, wider and more open. Even at the height of August it is easy to find a spot with room to spare, and its sunsets with the castle silhouetted in the background are among the best in the village. Perfect for those seeking peace and quiet without giving up parking nearby.
Calypso beach with crystal-clear water next to the San Juan de los Terreros developments
Playa Calypso
In the northern part of the village, on the way to the Murcia border. Very clean water, a relaxed vibe and fewer comings and goings than the central beaches. If you are staying in the northern developments, this will be your local beach.
Los Cocedores cove with fine sand and caves carved into the rock near San Juan de los Terreros
Playa de los Cocedores
The jewel in the crown. A horseshoe-shaped cove sheltered from the wind, with ultra-fine sand, shallow turquoise water and curious caves carved into the sandstone where esparto grass was once boiled. It sits right on the boundary with Águilas and is one of the most photographed beaches on the whole Levante coast. In summer, get there early: it fills up fast.
Cala Panizo, a quiet natural cove south of San Juan de los Terreros
Cala Panizo
At the southern tip of the municipality, looking towards Villaricos. Small, natural in feel and much loved by snorkellers thanks to its rocky seabed. A perfect plan when you fancy a change of scene with barely any driving.
San Juan de los Terreros Castle: the watchman of the Mediterranean
San Juan de los Terreros Castle, an 18th-century fortress above the Mediterranean Sea
Perched on a headland overlooking the whole bay, the castle is the village's symbol and its finest viewpoint. It was built in 1764, in the reign of Charles III, as a defensive battery against the Barbary pirate raids that plagued this coast. Its rounded layout and masonry walls follow the model of the 18th-century coastal fortifications that dot the shoreline between Cartagena and Almería.
Following its restoration, the castle houses an interpretation centre on the history of the fortress and the Pulpí coastline, and its esplanade offers one of the finest panoramas in the province: the village and its beaches on one side, the Isla Negra and Isla de Terreros floating on a deep blue sea on the other. You can walk up along a pleasant path or take the panoramic lift from the lower part of town — a welcome comfort in the hot months.
💡 Local tip: go up at sunset. The golden light over the islands and the village lighting up at your feet is one of those scenes that make the trip worthwhile. Check seasonal opening times, as they differ between summer and winter.

Isla Negra and Isla de Terreros: a natural monument just offshore
Isla Negra and Isla de Terreros, a volcanic natural monument off San Juan de los Terreros
Just off the coast rise two volcanic islets declared a Natural Monument of Andalusia: Isla de Terreros, the larger one, and Isla Negra, whose dark colour betrays its lava origins. Beyond their geological value, they are a sanctuary for seabirds: Audouin's gull, one of the Mediterranean's most threatened species, nests here.
You cannot set foot on the islands — precisely to protect their feathered residents — but their waters are a paradise for diving and snorkelling, with volcanic rock seabeds teeming with life. In summer it is common to paddle over by kayak or paddle board from the village beaches, always respecting the protected area.
The Giant Geode of Pulpí: a world-class wonder 10 minutes away
Inside the Giant Geode of Pulpí with transparent gypsum crystals in the Mina Rica
Few destinations can claim a world-class geological wonder ten minutes from the beach. Hidden in the Mina Rica at Pilar de Jaravía, revealed to the public in 1999, lies the Giant Geode of Pulpí: a cavity lined with huge transparent gypsum crystals so perfect they look hand-carved. It is one of the largest visitable geodes in the world, and the tour, which winds through the galleries of the old iron and lead mine before reaching the geode, is an experience that amazes children and adults alike.
💡 Important: visits are in small groups and advance booking is essential; in summer places sell out fast, so book several days ahead. If you do not have a vehicle, you can get there easily with the local taxi service or a hire car.
The seafront promenade: the heart of the village
Life in Terreros revolves around its seafront promenade, which runs along the Mar Serena and Mar Rabiosa beaches. In the morning it belongs to runners, cyclists and early strollers; at midday the terraces smell of rice dishes and grilled fish; and on summer nights it becomes the whole village's meeting point, with evening craft markets, music and ice creams until late.
Pleasant coastal paths lead off the promenade to the north and south, letting you explore much of the shoreline on foot, with viewpoints over the islands. And for boat lovers, the marinas of Águilas and Villaricos, a few minutes away by car, offer boat trips, sport fishing and boat hire.
Food and dining: between the sea and Europe's finest market garden
Caldero rice and fresh fish at a restaurant on the San Juan de los Terreros promenade
Eating well in Terreros is easy. The local cuisine draws on two privileged larders: the fish and seafood landed daily at the Águilas and Garrucha fish markets — with the famous red prawn as the star — and the vegetables of the Pulpí market gardens, among the most important in Europe, renowned for their tomatoes and lettuces.
In the restaurants along the promenade and in the village, seafood rice dishes rule — caldero, black rice, arroz a banda — alongside grilled fish, fried seafood and sardine skewers. And in summer the beach bars right on the sand are a must: few things beat a paella facing the islands with your feet still salty from the sea.
💡 Local tip: in July and August, book a table for dinner, especially at weekends. And if you head out for dinner in Águilas, Vera or Mojácar and want to enjoy it without worrying about the car, remember you can come back by taxi.
Where to stay in San Juan de los Terreros
Terreros' accommodation is geared towards quiet, family-friendly stays. Holiday apartments and residential complexes with pools on the first and second lines from the beach predominate, many with sea and island views, complemented by hotels and aparthotels both in the village itself and in the nearby coastal resort of Mar de Pulpí, a stone's throw to the south.
Our honest advice as locals: if you travel in July or August, book months ahead, because Terreros fills up with loyal families who return year after year. Out of season you will find excellent prices and a climate that still invites you to the beach: lunching on a sunny terrace in the middle of January is not unusual.

Things to do in Terreros: diving, snorkelling, hiking and much more
🤿 Diving & snorkelling
The volcanic seabeds around Isla Negra and Isla de Terreros are among the best dive sites on the Levante coast: walls, posidonia meadows, octopus, grouper and shoals of damselfish. For snorkelling, Los Cocedores and Cala Panizo are perfect even for children. In Terreros and Águilas you will find dive centres offering try-dives and guided immersions.
🥾 Hiking
The coastal route to Los Cocedores, the paths around the castle with viewpoints over the islands, or the Sierra del Aguilón trails for those after something more demanding. In spring and autumn, with mild temperatures, walking these cliffs is a real treat.
🛶 Kayaking & paddle boarding
Paddling out to the islands at dawn, with the water like a mirror, is one of Terreros' great pleasures. In summer there are kayak and board rental points by the main beaches, plus guided routes hugging the coastline and revealing coves you can only reach by sea.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 With kids
Beaches with shallow water, playgrounds by the promenade, evening ice creams, the Geode visit (they love the adventure of entering a real mine), the castle and the Sunday market. Terreros is, quite simply, one of the easiest destinations on the whole coast for a family trip.

Useful information for your visit
☀️ Climate
Over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year and one of the driest, mildest climates in Europe. Hot summers softened by the sea breeze and very mild winters, with highs around 17–20 °C. The swimming season easily stretches from May to October. Rain is scarce, and when it comes it is usually in short autumn spells.
🛍️ Weekly street market
The San Juan de los Terreros street market is held on Sunday mornings, all year round, next to the promenade: fruit and vegetables from the Pulpí market gardens, clothes, shoes and a great atmosphere. In Pulpí town, market day is Wednesday. Bring cash: not all stalls take cards.
🎆 Fiestas
The big date is the Night of San Juan(23 June), with bonfires on the beach and a midnight swim. On 16 July, the Virgen del Carmen is carried in a seaborne procession around the bay, and in high summer the promenade hosts craft markets and activities almost daily.

🚗 Driving tips for the area
Terreros is superbly connected via the AP-7 motorway (with its own exit) and the A-7 dual carriageway. The coastal roads towards Águilas and Villaricos are scenic and quiet, ideal for discovering coves. In August, park early near the beaches: by mid-morning spaces are scarce. And on trips to unpaved coves such as Los Cocedores, drive slowly: the last few metres are on a dirt track.
🧳 Tips for visitors
Sun protection always, even in winter: the Almería sun is unforgiving. Bring water shoes for the rocky coves, cash for the Sunday market, and book the Geode and summer restaurants in advance. The village has a pharmacy, supermarkets, cash machines and a medical centre; the main hospitals are in Huércal-Overa and Lorca, both around 30–40 minutes away.
